In the last Re-Gen Farming Blog we discussed the what and why of transitioning. This week we will tackle some elephants in the room preventing a successful transition before we get to the how. As you move through this process you should revert back to the what, why, how system for your decision-making.
From my experience there are two big reasons people don’t move forward when transitioning, so let’s address those elephants that affect a good number of people (even if they don’t admit it) with a successful transition.
Firstly, let’s discuss FOMO (fear of missing out) and secondly FOOPO (fear of other people’s opinion). If you ask most people in passing, they will say ‘no’, FOMO and FOOPO have little to any effect on their decision making process. But when you dig a little deeper both FOMO and FOOPO are probably the 2 biggest reasons people don’t move forward and continue to do what everyone else is doing, even though in the back of their minds they know they should really make changes.
Let me put your mind at ease in regard to FOMO. There is no good reason you should miss out on profit or yield if you transition correctly, but a successful transition will take the time it takes. Taking the path less travelledwill require going against popular opinion and you will need to be comfortable with being a dark horse. Unfortunately, I can’t help what others will think about your change in direction! This brings me to FOOPO, and believe me often people who loudly express one opinion in public often have a little trial out of the public eye, trying something they don’t want others to see.
The most important aspect of implementing the how, is to take the time it takes. So often I see people charge full steam ahead into their transition, making drastic changes too quickly. This often leads to failures and can slow the transition process down and in a lot of cases people just give up. So, take the time it takes, it is worth it in the long run.
We have just discussed the hardest part of the transition process, changing your mindset (the brain!), FOMO, FOOPO and rushing. Once you have addressed the most challenging part we can move into the easiest part of transition, the actual steps you will take. There are many books about the actions you can take to transition to low input farming, but let’s make it really easy. As you gain confidence you can delve deeper and refine your program to suit you and your enterprise.
By keeping it simple, I truly believe anyone can make changes for the better. The simple transition skeleton we will go through next Blog, is not the only way, but it is what I have seen work consistently.
Stay tuned for our next Blog which will address the actual steps you will take. In the meantime, if you want help with your What and Why, please reach out to Re-Gen Farming through our inbox or call Luke on 0427 138 100.
